Has anyone seen the latest Earthmovers mag , it has an article in it about a clean up on a military gun range with the gear being operated by remote control, the drivers are in a container some distance away in what can only be described as a simulator for the excavator and dumper.

I'm not a caterpillar hater by any means but classic plant and machinery is dieing a death imo,its full of old cats and not much more and why put new machine features in it?leave that to earthmoovers mag.

all i can say is it must be difficult to keep finding material to put in the mag yr on yr,i think its the fact that the irish are more accomadating and their work has boomed that they have filled the mag a lot recently,a lot of people shy away from publicity which is a shame as there is a lot of goodies tucked away,on another note just imagine someone turning up to do a piece on our lord and seeing him in his shorts waving his chainsaw,:D:D

Yes I did finally catch up with this article. Very impressive in my opinion and proof of just what can be achieved.

I thought the birds eye camera was a bit of inspiration as relying on a front / back camera would be a bit disconcerting.

I imagine a lot of operator feed back went into that final set up.

The grafics on that ADT were something else!

everyone i know thinks earth movers has gone down hill because its just a advert for paddys

You keep talking like that and you may find a bunch waiting on your doorstep looking a word. keep your offensive remarks to yourself.

As regards Earthmovers magazine I reckon this guy Owen Daly has been working like a trojan pumping out these articles on mainly southern Irish companies and Graham Black has bunged them in to pad out the magazine.
Sadly for them the gravy train is about to finish as most of the big jobs and motorway jobs are almost finished, one plant salesman told me recently that soon he reckons 40 ton diggers will be unheard of in Ireland due to the lack of work. If you had really read the articles from this guy you would have noticed that at the start of the recession contractors were moving from housing work to roadwork but what they left out was that these guys were trying to muscle in on the existing road contractors therefore driving down rates etc. At present I would imagine a lotof these guys are bankrupt so its not all sun and roses in Ireland-what say you stock? is this an accurate assessment?

I find it offensive because the term paddy most times is used as a derogatory remark and in this case is a derogatory remark.

The second piece to the post is my opinion as to why there are so many articles on Irish companies-you also have to remember that most journalists will have a file of finished articles with the magazine editor so these all have to be used up. This explains why you have roll out of magazines, each month painting a rosy picture on the emerald isle but the truth is this past while its more like a mad scramble to get to the last lifeboat before the ship sinks.

hi Trax
Don't get me wrong I have been called a mick, a paddy amongst other things but all with a touch of banter etc. I don't mind this at all,I can give as good as I get -ask Tony or Graham or anybody else that knows me. But in this case I am not happy,I have registered my disapproval and am willing to let it go at that!

The other point I was trying to get across was that I am not entirely enthused with Mr Dalys output either-there are a lot of donkeys (for want of a better word) in Ireland who throughout the Celtic Tiger period were working for crap rates the whole time. While brickies and the other trades had trebled their annual income, the plantmen soldiered on as usual working also for the big management companies meaning they were not getting paid as well. Also not one of you guys picked up on the bit where I said plant firms who has lost work due to building work stopping ,had muscled in on the roads companies. I reckon if you followed this up with a bit of reseach you'll find a lot of these companies are now gone-a totally different picture to that painted by Mr Daly and Mr Black. Ask Stock, any motorway jobs going on are existing contracts that are being finished off-there are no new contracts being let at present from what I can see.

Well said Neil,
Dont want to hi-jack the thread but are you still running the scrapers, the 9 and the 914 ?, I havent been "across the water" since my Liebherr days but understand the plant game in Ireland is suffering more than most.

We still have the 9, the 627's and the Liebherrs-the Liebherrs will be gone the start of may and possibly the 9. I do not really want to sell the 9 as it is in very good order but I had a friend asking me to work in Africa with him, bringing the 627's but as he already has two 9's we do not need a third!
We are waiting for news of a contract or two shortly!!!
Hows things with you Innes-are you still in the plant game? Before I forget-glad to see you're now on this board.
The plant game is finished in Ireland in my opinion with this recession-it was finished anyway with all this H&S bullshit, operators cards and the way business is now conducted by these big management contractors.

Hi Neil,
Yes, the recession has hit everybody in the plant game hard and I agree about the crap the industry is awash with now, health and safety has its place but common sense has been thrown out the window by people with no site or real world experience and the sad thing is that we now all have to dance to their tune or we don't work.
I'm back on the spanners with Castlebridge Plant (Scottish Coal) on the coal sites working mostly on Cats, D9T & Rs 740s,777D/B,16G,330,325 etc
If the're any good jobs going in Africa let me know.

A very intresting and informative post Neil.

I had wondered about the boom as it appeared to be and how long it could continue.
In the plant game we seem to be our own worst enemies when it comes to rates. :(
I am sorry to say I dont know your island well enough to place companies and contracts north, south, east or west so your look on things is quite educational.
I tend to feel that articles will come from places, contracts and contractors that are willing to have the press on site. I believe any one of us are quite capable of contacting a mag and saying " come see me " but not many of us are in a position to make that call. Fair play to the ones that can and do, IMHO.

I enjoy the mag. The lads on site have a good laugh as every other screwdriver on a machine they have come across is reading porn :D

Bob,
Thanks for your reply. There is no problem calling me a paddy when its used in friendship but the inference given was a slur on Irish people just because him and his mates do not like the Irish. If you note he has made no attempt to dispel this.
Sadly Bob my 627,s were bought for a job three years ago that disappeared like smoke into thin air when the recession hit (we got hammered a year before you guys on the mainland). James Moore hot spannered the last of his 24,s last year,Kevin Geary worked two years in a row on the Newry by pass and I was told recently he hot spannered his 24,s for scrap money. That leaves Roy McCullough of Broughshane with a fleet of 24,s he bought two years ago, some have been used on the Ballymena by pass and he would appear to be well in with FP McCanns so possibly may get another road job off them. As said earlier I am hoping to shift the whole lot to Africa where I hope to swap one set of problems for another!!!!

Sean: you could likely read yours, sell it to me for 1/2 price and slip it in the mail and I would still get it before the magazine store's shipment of mags comes in. that way it doesn't hurt so much........
That Classic Plant mag did mention this forum on one of their pages.
