this could and will have some serious ramifications for VW !!:eek:

"Volkswagen's chief executive has said sorry after US regulators found some of its cars disguised pollution levels. -

....... The EPA said that the fine for each vehicle that did not comply with federal clean air rules would be up to $37,500 (24,000). With 482,000 cars sold since 2008 involved in the allegations, it means the fines could reach $18bn. "

The way I read it is that the software altered the engine's running parameters to make it run cleaner (but with much less power) if it detected that the engine was being tested.

They are bloody clever these days ...... could do with engines that can detect being tested when having an MOT :)

Never in this world would they pay an $18bn fine

regrettably guys, they've been caught with their pants well and truly down ...... blatantly cheating with the engine management software.

Very probably the tip of the iceberg amongst all of 'em ...... but Veedub have been the first to be found out

Certainly knocking the crap out of their share value!!:(

Frankly, after all the crap the Yanks have pumped into the atmosphere over the decades with their 'gas guzzlers', I too would tell 'em to go **** themselves ........ but they will want to continue to sell their wares over there ....... so they's just a bit stuffed

Very doubtful, when the entire company was only valued at 46bn before the shit hit the fan

'Praps the yanks want 'em out of the market place?

shares have dropped 22% so only a 30bn company today. how can such a rediculously large fine do any good for anyone? loss of jobs when vw folds? mental

They've duped the EU as well, so there'll be more fines from this side of the pond. Be interesting to see how the Yanks will react if Ford or GM get caught doing the same.

Now if you were the MD of VW usa and you were clever enough to be that MD, you would have said the mode the carsncomputor switched to was the workshop service mode and that the fact that the car was not steering etc and so limited emissions whilst in the confines of the workshop, if this mode then was activated in the same perameters due to the testing it was a huge oversight and was obviously a serious issue that had been over looked ..... thank you for bringing it to our attention ..... now could I claim just 1% of the imposing fines for my help sir ? NO because you have already proved your inability to be the man for the job .... and spilled the beans duhr brain !!

I really don't see the problem.

As long as certain nations continue to pump plumes of shite into air in the process of producing usable fuel from what is being extracted from the ground the rest of us and all the emission regulations might a well be pissing in the sea in an effort to raise sea level.

Guarantee a pound to a pinch of salt that VW are not the only ones, simply first to get sussed.

Hopefully the whole bullshit of emissions regs being pretty unobtainable will be called into play now. Will save everyone lots of hassle.

Why should we have to put up with Ad blue crap etc when Africa doesn't have to bother!

Absolutely Rob and as said previously, the Yanks were some of the biggest offenders ...... for decades

Green taxes/legislation's just another way of bleeding us all dry, supposedly in our own name and best interests ........ BOLLOX

they wont get fines from other country's as its only the Californians/ epa who have stupidly low emissions regulations, that they are failing. the British will try to say that they cheated the emissions tax, but will be shot down by the EU ( read Germany) as soon as they open there mouth.

It was a perfect crime, until caught .

we're all being ripped off royally ...... in the name of anti-pollution/being green
This is just another example - you pay your bucks for 'the' 'green car' which it now transpires has been fraudulently sold to you!!

A class action for refunds/compensation could finish VW  (in it's present guise)
Would soon re-appear as VW2 or whatever, debt free

I don't think so as that only really affects commercial vehicles, not sure if VW make anything big enough, i stand to be corrected though.

The Americans are ones to talk about emissions, been poluting for years and still do in most of the country. UK emission standards are apparently less stringent than California so only UK money grabbers will be disappointed I guess. This whole episode smacks of corruption at a high level !! and not at VW ;)
