Thanks, will have a look.

I did manage to buy a Cat traxcavator when I was 21, unsure what model it actually was - 4 cylinder turbo, non-powershift that was halfway through a rebuild.
Loved it, but got married and bought a house which meant it ended up leaving.

Seems to be a recurring story that...the buying with great intentions, and not getting to it.
I don't like leaving stuff outside so that limits how many machines I have as I'd rather let someone else have something than watch it rust away.

Hi JD450a,
Not a PM I'm afraid as I don't yet have 15 posts (diggerhayne - will reply asap).
The chaps for this summer and the following winter are allready in / currently travelling into the Antarctic for the season.

If you look on the BAS website www.antarctica.ac.uk you will find a section about working in the antarctic, and you should be able to register your interest so that you will get emailed when they start next years recruitment.

I will ask around and get back to you with more details on dates etc.
I have no idea what tickets are needed but suspect none as common sense seems to work best and much of the machinery is custom, and certainly not operating in a normal environment.

Other entry requirements such as health etc should be on the website somewhere, I'm not familiar with that as seafarers have a seperate medical certificate system. There are Docs on the bases etc, but the cost of a medi-vac is astronomical.

Hope this is some help.?

I started out my life at sea on oil and gas tankers and the large slow speed engines on tankers have pretty long strokes - IIRC the largest I was on was a 330m long 480,000 ton vlcc with a Man B&W 7 cylinder main engine - 700mm bore, 3.1 metre stroke.
Hence the username.
I will try and put a picture in here!

Long stroke what vessel do you work on? I was on the Brittannia oil platform a couple of months ago and the Ernest Shackleton was alongside!

Just aswell you were home! The misses wouldn't of been happy if you missed the birth!

I don't actually work on there but I go round most of the platforms servicing the lifeboats and skyscapes, hate the Brittannia as it has the free fall boats! Also spotted your ship on last weeks episode of the harbour on bbc Scotland
